The AQUABOX in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen has opened. At the official opening on September 22, Mayor Dr. Frank Nopper and IBA’27 Director Andreas Hofer jumped right into the water themselves and swam the first laps together in the new 25-meter pool.
The highlight of the AQUABOX: It is designed for more than one location. The two-story building, constructed using modular timber construction, is demountable, transportable, and can be reassembled at another site. For now, it provides swimming facilities in Zuffenhausen for schools, clubs, and the public. Later, it will be moved to Möhringen and eventually put into permanent use in Untertürkheim.
For 4a Architekten, the particular challenge was to translate the complex functional, technical, and spatial requirements of an indoor swimming pool into the logic of modular timber construction. Forty-six prefabricated timber modules form the two-story structure, while the swimming hall was constructed using prefabricated elements. Exposed timber structures, generous glazing, and strategically used colors and natural light create a bright, welcoming atmosphere.
The concept was developed by POOL out of the BOX, which served as the general contractor for the project. In collaboration with 4a Architekten, Blumer Lehmann, Kannewischer Ingenieurgesellschaft, ZELLER Bäderbau, Wassertechnik Wertheim, and other project participants, the modular approach was transformed into a fully-fledged indoor swimming pool.
The AQUABOX is an official project of the IBA’27 in the Stuttgart Region.
